"Two Events and My Skin" 2014
Kyoto City University of Arts/Kyoto (Master's degree graduation project)
I felt frustrated that I couldn't convey my thoughts to others through painting, so I expressed myself through sculpture and performance, but when I graduated, I once again faced the characteristics of painting.
I mainly paint things like the food I ate while creating, my own body, and crows that I cannot touch, but these are very personal motifs that cannot be easily shared with viewers. I deliberately amplified the gap that arises there, creating a space where viewers can imagine a new story. I painted most of the screen with artificial colors that ignore the actual scenery, and partially erased the image of the painting, creating a struggle as to whether a story would be born or not.
At the time, I was creating at a university along a national highway in a commuter town, and I felt a sense of loss of appetite every day when I saw signs for chain stores and impersonal guardrails. While he feels despair that his thoughts are not being conveyed to others and that the development of the town is moving forward without his will, the song also expresses his admiration for the crows that (appear to) live unwaveringly, following their instincts, and his encouragement by the beautiful color and crisp taste of hassaku oranges.
